My first car crush was with a British Racing Green Mazda Miata, renamed the MX-5 (Though it will always be a Miata to me).  When it comes to the price and well how it performs, others have tried to compete, but on one can come close. Is the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider going to be the one to out finally do it?

What I like:

  • The interior is simple and modern.  It does look identical to the MX-5.
  • Everything has been designed with the comfort of the driver in mind.
  • It has a very zippy 1.4L turbo 4 cylinder, with 160hp and 184lb-ft of torque.
  • Acoustic windshield, more sound deadening under the carpet and thicker rear glass is what adds some extra weight to the Fiat making conversation easier.  Extra weight makes it feel a bit more planted when taking corners.

Some of the things that I don’t like:

  • The Spider’s extra torque is nice, but, it does have some turbo lag.
  • The awkward location of the cup holders.
  • The Fiat has a longer nose and more rear overhang. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder;I prefer the styling of the MIATA.
